The 2023 August Design Comp Finalists
(There will be another three designs released in September)
Alright, so… We actually needed to make the entire top 10.
There is too much on the lines these days to ‘pick winners’ then hopefully the designs work out. So, we produced them all. Made sure that they all fundamentally worked well as signets and then had a better visual scale to go off.
There weren’t too many ‘surprises’ as such, as based on some assumptions and concerns that we have expressed over the past few weeks - we had a good understanding of how they’d all look.
When judging the competition, there always needs to be a degree of ‘trust us, we know this will crank’. It may be less of a heater on paper, but there are components here that make for a master signet. In this round, that design was Ravens. It didn’t have a huge impact on the audience initially. However I was very confident this design would be unreal. It is. It came out so sick, just you wait.
The other two are clearly both amazing designs, however I felt I needed to give Ravens a bit further of an explanation prior to August 1st.
Fatal Ascent was arguably one of the front running designs to take out the win. Such an immediate high-intensity, visually amazing design. Hits hard and fast. The two tone is always a risk, but generally that is when the gold element is forced. This isn’t. Very relevant and looks unreal in the signet.
1936 (Thylacine Sighting) - has a nostalgic and Aussie backing. The design approach is a strong move, with balanced yet opposing Tasmanian Tigers. Again, this structure makes sense due to the nature of these Australian icons going extinct in 1936. Therefore the skeleton has a purposeful relevance.
The thing I love about the set up this year is that we now are able to sit back and speculate on the winner along with all of you. It’s now over to the customers to vote with their orders. So let us hear your thoughts! Who’s taking it out?

A quick summary of the campaign;
- These are the first three finalists, sold for the entire month of August
- The winning design (most pieces sold) will be released into the 2024 Howlet Collection
- September, the next three finalists will be released. These will be announced August 27th
Another exciting development that we alluded to a few months earlier, is that we will be moving over to holding stock-on-hand of our exclusive releases. Therefore your orders will be dispatched within 2-3 days. However, at this stage it’s just a small batch of stock so once those sell out it will go into Made To Order. So get amongst it early!
